Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Add a bit of the sugar, sprinkle the yeast on top, and pour in 1-2 tbsp of the lukewarm milk. Cover and let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy and active.

-
2
Add the remaining milk, sugar, egg, salt, and vanilla extract. Begin kneading the dough, then add the soft butter last and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

-
3
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.

-
4
Divide the dough into 8 equal portions, shape into balls, and place them into a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise again for about 30 minutes.

Brush the Buchteln with some of the butter and bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F, top/bottom heat) for about 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

-
6
Right after baking, brush the Buchteln again with the remaining butter to give them a glossy finish and extra softness.

-
7
While the Buchteln are baking, prepare the vanilla sauce: In a small saucepan, gently heat all the ingredients while constantly stirring until the sauce slightly thickens - do not let it boil.

-
8
Let the Buchteln cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm with the vanilla sauce. Buchteln are best enjoyed warm - straight from the oven with creamy vanilla sauce, they’re absolutely irresistible!
